Whereas in the past and still now for a short time, one can check ownership of a domain through whois, that convenience will soon not be available anymore in its current format.

Domain ownership and other information, now freely available through WHOIS to anyone, will no longer comply with European Law, due to the General Data Protection Regulation (DSGVO) going into effect on May 25, 2018.

As ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has so far not reacted with an acceptable proposal nor worked out a satisfactory solution; it remains to be seen how WHOIS' current open access information, can be adjusted to comply with European Data Protection Law and still supply domain buyers and brokers with relevant domain name information.
